Canon EF 50mm f 1.8 ii Camera Lens – Best 50mm Lens On The Market?
Welcome to my review of the Canon EF 50mm f 1.8 ii Camera Lens. If you are thinking about purchasing this lens for your camera then I am sure that you will find this review helpful and hopefully very informative.
The question I asked myself was really simple. Is the Canon EF 50mm the best 50mm camera lens available today?
If so where can I find the best deal on this impressive camera lens?
You will find the answers to this question and a great deal more on this page. I bought this one myself and having used it for a few months on a pretty regular basis, I firmly believe that every camera user should have this as the best standard lens in their bag.
It is most unusual to see a camera lens, and I mean any camera lens, getting a 4.5 out of 5 star rating from buyers at Amazon. That in itself is a very high achievement. What makes this even more impressive is the fact that this has been reviewed by over 2,400 actual buyers.
It speaks volume for this great standard 50mm lens with a f/1.8 maximum aperture. Please read the remainder of this article to find out why this lens is such a popular choice with all camera lovers. You will also find out why I reviewed this in so much detail and bought it myself.
Canon EF 50mm f 1.8 ii Standard Autofocus Lens
Main Features & Benefits Explained
Canon also produce an EF50mm f/1.4mm lens which I have used before but just to be clear this lens is about the Canon Ef 50mm f/1.8 ii Lens.
Depending on where you purchase this lens it does come into the “affordable” bracket and that is always a really big consideration for me. There are thousands of lenses on the market and sadly most of them fall well outside my own budget.
To the best of my knowledge this is the cheapest lens that Canon make but they have left nothing out in terms of providing quality. It is small, lightweight and can easily fit in your camera bag or even in your pocket. That was one of the big attractions for me when I came to make my mind up.
Fixed Focal Length
I selected this lens as I like two things from my pictures which are:
1. I take a lot of portrait shots
2. The picture must be natural looking for me
This lens does both those jobs to a really high standard as you will be able to see for yourself from the pictures below. There is a lot of technical detail that sits behind how this lens works and again I will cover this later in the article.
In simple terms though any lens that can take really good close-ups to a really high quality will always meet my needs.

Main EF 50 Lens Review
Many years of research and development went into the creation of the 50mm standard lens. For many this was the benchmark that was used for the production of all lenses. I suppose the question I eventually asked myself, could I be serious as an amateur photographer and not have one of these in my selection of lenses.
The other thing I knew was that camera lenses are just really expensive. When I first started shopping around I remember saying to myself I could never afford one of these. For anything of decent quality you were looking at $300 and more.
That’s when I happened to start picking up really good reviews on the Canon EF50. Since buying it I am even more reluctant to spend my money on another lens as the quality of this is more than good enough for me.
When I bought and started to use this lens the sharpness of the images produced actually shocked me. They were incredible and they have a shallow depth that I had not witnessed before.
When I received the lens and found it was made from plastic that took me by surprise even though I had read about it. I guess it just made me nervous but having used it a lot, it shows no great wear and tear, so you can put your mind at ease on that front.
It also took me a while to get used to focusing this lens and the autofocus is a little slow but for someone like me that is actually more of a help than a hindrance. You just need to be patient and take a little more time and you will be rewarded with great images. For me the images that you get from f8-f11 are stunning though it works well across all the ranges.
I was recently on holidays in Toronto and my cousin loaned me his Canon Rebel XT which is a top of the range product. I could not believe the weight this added to my camera. The EF 50 is just so lightweight that it actually spoils you in this area. Hand on heart I didn’t see a huge difference in picture quality and I was glad to get my own cheaper lens back on.
I read several reviews comparing this to the 1.4 version and all of them showed that the Canon EF50 1.4 was slightly better for picture quality and speed, but it costs almost three times as much. Personally I could not justify that type of spend for such a minor improvement in pictures. (Speed was not a big issue for me anyway)
Overall the quality of lens you get for the money that you pay is in my opinion really good value for money. In many of the reviews that I read on Amazon and other forums a lot of opinion said, “Don’t think any more about buying this lens, just get it.” I have to say I would now be that type of convert as this is just a great lens for the money.
My Verdict On The EF 50mm Lens
The EF50 I believe is impressive. For anyone beginning to develop their camera skills a 50mm lens has bee the lens of choice for many years. Canon have over delivered in my opinion with this lens keeping it affordable but not compromising on quality.
It is always worthwhile comparing the different lenses out there but this did not become a number ONE on Amazon’s best selling list for nothing. You will not be disappointed if you decide to purchase this lens as the picture quality is excellent and it is simple and easy to use.
