Must-Have Camcorder Accessories

One from many hobbies that will give you not just satisfaction but also financially that is photography. I know, the cam is not cheap, if you want the best one, but it is worthy.

After dropping a few hundred dollars on a camcorder, you may not be eager to part with any additional cash on accessories. But there are some add-ons that are crucial to protecting and enhancing your camcorder and the videos it’s recording. Here’s a look at some must-have camcorder accessories.

A Case

A high quality camcorder case is among the most important accessories you can buy for your camcorder. A case will protect your camcorder from the elements and make it easier to carry your camcorder on long journeys. A quality case will have plenty of room for your other extras, such as memory cards, tapes or disks and even personal items such as cell phones, music players and keys.

Extra Memory

If you own a DVD, Mini DV or Blu-ray disc camcorder, you’ll need to have plenty of extra disks and tapes on hand for storing your recorded videos. Blank DVDs and Mini DV camcorder tape are widely available in a range of retail stores and online. Blank Blu-ray discs are not as widespread, but can be readily found online.

If you use a flash memory camcorder that does not offer internal memory, you’ll need to buy an SD/SDHC card or a Memory Stick Pro Duo card (if you own a Sony camcorder) to store your photo. When shopping for a card, try to buy the highest capacity you can afford. The higher the capacity, the more video it will store.

Tripod

There’s a reason why professional photographers and videographers use tripods (and single-legged monopods): they’re useful!

Of course, they’re also large and not always convenient to carry around. Still, for certain occassions like long sporting events and recitals, using a tripod can not only make things easier on you arms but also improve the quality of your video.

If you’re filming a game from the top of the bleachers or a concert from the back rows and using your camcorder’s optical zoom lens to get closer to the action, it will be very sensitive to motion. As steady as you think you can hold your camcorder, you can’t hold it steady enough to prevent camera blur (even if you camcorder has optical image stabilization). A tripod will ensure that video is steady.

DVD Burner

No matter what storage format your camcorder uses, burning a DVD of your video is still one the best ways to store it for the longer term. Many camcorder manufacturers sell accessory, standalone DVD burners that connect directly to the camcorder via USB cable or Firewire. A DVD movie of your footage can be burned directly from the camcorder without using a PC.

Many camcorders will feature a dedicated button for burning a DVD when connected to a burner from the same manufacturer. For this reason, it usually makes sense to purchase a burner from the same manufacturer as your camcorder.

Of course, if your computer has a DVD burner built-in, there’s no need to run out and purchase one. So be sure you don’t have an internal DVD burner in your desktop or laptop before buying an external burner.

You can’t just wake up one morning and decide you’re going to start a craft business. Running any type of successful business requires planning. Your first step in the planning process is to figure out exactly what you want to accomplish by starting a crafts business. This reason could be as simple as wanting to get rid of all those spare quilts hanging around the house to quitting your odious day job.

Running a Crafts Business Part Time = Extra Money

The majority of crafters I yak it up with at craft and trade shows started their business on the side to make extra cash doing something they enjoyed. The reasons for this are really varied. Quitting a hated day job (those lottery dreams just didn’t pan out!), saving to educate the children or having more financial leverage so that each unexpected cash outlay is not so stressful – to name just a few.

That last one is a biggie. Let’s face it, money might not buy happiness, but life sure is a lot more enjoyable when you don’t have to worry about how you’re going to fix your kid’s tooth broken in a skateboarding accident or shutter every time you start your car because you wonder how much that new rattle is going to cost to fix.

Many crafters start their business part time to satisfy immediate cash concerns. Going full time with the craft business can always be an option somewhere down the road. If you’re planning to flat out walk away from a regular paycheck working for someone else the amount of planning you’ll need to do is immense. For example, you need to figure out how you’re going to cover all your personal living expenses without that steady paycheck.

Moms Seeking Home Work

One escalating trend is the stay at home mom (or dad) looking for ways to make extra money. Running a craft business is an ideal home based business. Unless your craft involves some hazardous material, it’s as simple as finding a spare corner in your house, garage or basement to set up shop. If your children aren’t of school age, part of your planning will involve how you’re going to work your business around caring for your children.

A home based craft business is not a substitute for adequate outside childcare. It’s just not possible to plop in a Sesame Street DVD and think you’re going to get an uninterrupted block of time to work on your crafts. One possible suggestion is arrange with other parents you know to share babysitting duties. That way you can forge out some quality alone time to devote yourself 100% to the craft business. However, if you’re the type of parent who doesn’t feel comfortable having someone else watch their children, this option will not work for you.

Early Retirement

Maybe you were forced into early retirement or are seriously considering taking an early retirement package. While it might seem like the decision to make some extra money by opening a craft business is a logical one – after all you’ve kind of been forced into it – really think about it and make sure that this is the right business for you.

Crafting is Work Just Like Any Other Job Like all hobbies, sad but true, making crafts turns into a job if you have to do it. Serious intent to make a livable profit is the most important divider between the hobby crafter and those ready to start a craft business. Ask yourself – are you willing to put in the hours and effort needed to create a successful business? Can you be flexible – are you willing to change business methods and operations in order to move towards making a profit?

Three Fresh Ideas for Holiday Decorating

Decorations really set the mood for the holiday season. As soon as trees start popping up in store display windows and every house on the block begins donning multicolored lights, you can feel the spirit of the season in the air.

While every family has their own special traditions, token decorations, and collection of ornaments, there’s nothing wrong with adding some new decorations to your assortment and extending the decorations to every room in the house. Try these tips for decorating this holiday season!

In the living room

If you’re bored by the same ol’ tree and ceramic Santa that you put up every year, try sprucing up your living room with a themed tree. All the rage this season, themed trees are cute and easy to assemble. Some of the most popular themed trees are the “Grinch” tree, modeled after the classic holiday movie, and the snowman tree, complete with snowman head, bulb buttons and boots. Both trees are a great option for spicing up your holiday decor, and everyone (especially the kids!) will love them.

In the kitchen

Decorations don’t have to stop with the living room—embrace the holiday season by adding a touch of Christmas to every room. Hang a string of classic white lights above your kitchen cabinets for a romantic feel, or purchase festive red and green dish towels, wash cloths or oven mitts. Add the aroma of chocolate cookies baking in preparation for Santa, and the kitchen might become your favorite room in the house!

In the bedroom

Who says you can’t have a tree in your bedroom? Add a smaller tree in your bedroom (and the kids’ rooms, too!) so you can stay in the holiday spirit even after hours. If space is limited, purchase a pencil tree or a tabletop tree. If you’re really committed to the holiday spirit, having a separate set of bedding that is just for the holidays is a great way to decorate your sleeping quarters. Red sheets, green pillow shams and a decorative comforter will keep you warm and merry all night long.

Best Drawing Tools

Only the Best Materials Needed for Drawing

This is a list of my best drawing tools. This collection is by no means the Cadillac of art supplies, but in the mid to high range price point. While I don’t have the money for the super expensive stuff, I don’t like to compromise on quality.

I’ve drawn most of my life and have been perfecting my craft for years. As time goes on and I try new stuff I may tweak the list a bit.

I also believe that most of these drawing supplies are great for beginners. My reasons, there’s no use in handicapping yourself with crumby equipment. Thankfully, drawing isn’t like oil paints in that even the best doesn’t cost a fortune. Aside from that, experimenting with a variety of supplies always gets the creative juices flowing.

The Best Pencil For Sketching And Travel

The best sketching pencil so far, that’s not

even the best as pencils go, is the Derwent onyx pencil.

It’s remarkably strong, and it’s capable of some pretty black shades. No, not as good as carbon or charcoal because it is still graphite that will get shinny if you overdo it.

I’ve used it in serious finished work, like this here Anubis puppy, and I thought it was an ok serious pencil, but I haven’t made up my mind yet. It’s kind of an odd ball, or “black sheep” of my pencils.

One thing I want to note, I don’t think it would make a good pencil to learn how to draw with. Only reason is that it doesn’t give me that feeling a soft graphite does. I wouldn’t want someone to miss that experience because of my recommendation. It’s just too hard of a lead that I think would make an absolute beginner frustrated.

Now, on the doggie drawing over on the right, a good many of pencils came into play to create this, including my woodles pencils, but I wanted to state where I used the onyx. The little scratching texture effect on the blanket. Those are the little wispy lines. There is also a great deal on his snout, and pretty much any of the blackest blacks that are in the work.

The Best Drawing Pencils

CreateAcolor Graphite Pencils

The pencils that stuck out the most for me were the CreateAcolor’s professional grade pencils. They just seemed a cut above Derwent, although I’ve used derwent for years and it’s not a bad pencil.

They create beautiful, smooth lines, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced any gritty spots.

I no longer need to buy the big tin, just single pencils to replace the ones I’ve used up, but if you buy the big tin of 24 there is a schematic on the top of the lid, much like a box of whitman’s chocolates. This has pictures of pencil marks to show you how dark that particular pencil grade gets. This is one of those things I wish I had when I decided to quit dabbling and really learn to draw.

Sadly I haven’t been able to find the 24 count tin in my travels in a good while. If you happen to find it, better hop on that sucker, or if you find that the 12 count tin has the awesome schematic, please let me know. 🙂

The Best Drawing Paper

Drawing can be done on just about any paper, or with any tool that makes marks, but good paper makes a huge difference, sometimes the difference between success and failure depending on which drawing media you’re using.

On the flip side, the best paper makes for a better creative experience. Your pencil will also respond differently to different paper, this will either be frustrating, or give you a wonderful feeling. For artists who work with colored pencils, they need a paper with enough tooth to build layers of color that doesn’t fill up too fast. On the other hand, artists who use charcoal or pastels need a paper that is super toothy or else the powder particles won’t hold.

The paper I speak of here is the stuff you want to create finished work on, I have and use several different varieties since I’m hopelessly addicted to art supplies, but here is both of my favorites.

The Best Hand Held Pencil Sharpener

Those pencils aren’t going to sharpen themselves! This particular issue has always been a problem with me. I’ve tried everything in the past.

I’ve always had romantic notions of the artists that use a knife to hone their pencil tips with care. This, I’ve been told and read is the best way to sharpen your professional pencils. I’ve never liked it.

For me the convenience of a regular, no frills pencil sharpener and a sand paper block was all I could deal with. I just want to get back to work!

Convenient, yes, but sadly most pencil sharpeners suck. They wear out super fast, and when they do wear out they chew rather than sharpen. This creates a ton of waste and frustration. I’ve been known to rage when it snaps the tip off of my lead causing me to stop and grab a 9H pencil to dig it out.

Even worse they are deceptively cheap, so one doesn’t notice the added cost and waste of having to buy a new sharpener just because the blade has worn out. This cost adds up over time.

Of course, there are electric pencil sharpeners. I give you an unprofessional “LOL” at this. You can’t take them with you.

The Best Artist’s Erasers

The eraser is also a great drawing tool that’s often overlooked. I use it for the obvious, to fix mistakes, for pulling out graphite from the tooth to lighten the tonal value of an area, and finally I actually use it to draw with.

I like to use three types:

The Kneaded, well it’s not exactly a traditional kneaded, but I’ll explain in a minute. Your trusted kneaded putty will do all sorts of stuff. Clean up, pull out graphite or charcoal, clean any smudges, create shapes. It’s the one that I use the most.

The regular white plastic eraser. For all of those general tasks that the other erasers can’t do. It’s ok to not have the best here, provided it’s not one of those pink erasers. You don’t want it to destroy, or otherwise flatten the tooth of your paper, or even worse, to rip it to shreds. But, the best does exist! I’ll show you below.

The last, is my trusty clicker eraser. The one I like to use is the tuff stuff stick. I used to use the fatter clickers, but they were terrible to draw with, yet not big enough to erase large areas. Plus, with my old clicker if I bore too hard on it I would nip off the top! Took me a long time to find tuff stuff.

UHU’s White Or Blue Tac As An Eraser

Better than any kneaded eraser on the market
Let me explain my substitute for the kneaded eraser. I like to use white tac. It can be pretty hard to find and you have to get it from the UK. lol. It’s the same as blue tac and you can use the blue too! Either one you can get your paws on.

It comes in a larger quantity than real thing, which also makes it cheaper. It’s stronger, lasts longer, and picks up more graphite and charcoal. It makes me hate to have to use the old kneaded putties. This is why I crowned it the best.

Brayer Techniques

Brayer techniques in ink and acrylics for art journaling, mixed media, and collage work

My brayer is one of my favorite art tools – it’s incredibly versatile and can provide precision results and serendipitous beauty depending on what brayer technique I’m using. The brayer is an incredibly multi-purpose tool and I’d like to share with you all the brayer techniques I know – so far – and add to this page as I learn more about this amazing artistic tool.

What exactly is a brayer? A quick introduction to brayers…

Basically, a brayer is a paint roller. Not the soft, fuzzy kind like for painting walls and ceilings, but similar. They are smaller, handheld tools that are frequently used for printmaking, but are growing in popularity as a scrapbooking, rubber stamping, and mixed media tool.

Mixed Media Brayer Technique with Kaleidacolor Inkpad

I made the colorful layered background on this art print in just seconds. It took me longer to photograph it than to create it! I used a simple brayer technique involving a specialty ink pad called Kaleidacolor. Each Kaleidacolor pad comes with five individual color that snap together to create a lovely rainbow striped stamp pad. The innovative design allows you to unsnap the colors when you’re not using it so that the inks don’t bleed together like they do with other multicolor ink pads.

TIP: Always store any ink pad upside down and wrapped with a rubber band to keep the lid tight. This increases the lifespan of you ink pad by allowing the ink to settle towards the top of the pad, and minimizing evaporation due to a loose lid.

An example of using the Kaleidacolor Brayer Technique

Here’s a video that some one made with a brayer technique very similar to how I created the rainbow poster. She is using a glossy cardstock and going for a smoother, more blended brayer technique but I purposefully left my colors a bit uneven and blocky and brayered on watercolor paper to get more texture and layers. (Also, she stamps a resist image before starting with her brayer technique.) Either way is very fun, and as you can probably tell there is a lot of room for playing around with this technique.

Acrylic Paint Brayer Techniques

Acrylic Paints Acrylic paints are pretty much my number one pigment of choice, be it cheap craft paints or the higher-quality, artist-grade acrylic paints. I’m always on the lookout for new and exciting ways to use it. Using a brayer to apply acrylic paints to your artwork can have all kind of interesting effects – it’s a bit of an adventure because it can be very hard to predict exactly what will happen, but I’ve rarely been disappointed. (The only times were when I used too much paint – a little acrylic paint goes a LONG way with a brayer, it can be far too easy to use too much and end up with a muddy mess.)

Probably my first encounter with using a brayer with acrylic paint was during a the first annual retreat for my local ATC group. One of our members led about fifteen of us through the exercise “Mail Art To The Self” from the book Kaleidoscope: Ideas & Projects to Spark Your Creativity. The exercise was created by artist Juliana Coles and I can’t recommend it enough – I’ve done it several times since and it’s always invigorating. Part of the exercise involves applying paint to a large surface as fast as you can, and she suggests using a brayer for that. Our exercise leader let me borrow hers and I was thrilled with the results!

As you can see from the close-up on the left here, the white paint I brayered onto my project picked up and highlighted all the textures on the surface. To achieve that highlighting effect I used a very small amount of paint and not too much pressure when rolling the brayer. You can also see some interesting peaks and valleys in the paint, which I love the look of. That’s another great thing you get with brayering that you can’t really replicate with any other painting tool. The amount of peaks and valleys varies depending on how much paint you use, and thicker, high-quality paint will also give this effect more.

Note that this is an example of what brayering looking like with just one color – the browns and greens you see are the original cardboard surface and the paint I’d applied with brushes and my fingers before I got my hands on the brayer.

Here’s the journal spread I created after I watched the above video the first time. I grabbed a handful of my favorite bright colors of craft paint and dripped just a little bit of each color at a time, rolling the brayer back and forth at varying angles each time I added a new color. The brayering process smoothed the paint out so thinly that it dried very quickly and I could add more colors almost instantly without getting muddy results. It probably helped that it was a chilly day and my space heater made my studio nice and dry and warm!

The Girl in the Red Skirt

My Photography Project – A Cute Girl in Beautiful Red Skirt

As a photography student, I have a lot of assignments, projects, and exhibitions to be done. One of my latest assignment was given by my lecturer last winter for our mid-semester examinations. As I really enjoyed working on this project, I decided to share some of the photos that I submitted for this purpose through this article.

The title of this project is “The Girl in the Red Skirt.” My lecturer told me to take photographs of that reflects warmth as well as mysterious feelings. Somehow, I was very puzzled by the theme. There is no further explanation about the type of the subjects, the technical requirements, as well as the limitation of the theme interpretation. Confused, I tried to take a look at a lot of references online. Finally, I found great concept then immediately contacted one of my friends to be a model for this project.

Please let me know your opinion about the photos in this article. Just for your information, I can’t upload the best pictures because they were selected for exhibitions. Although the pics in the photos are not the best, but somehow I still love them very much.

Constructing the basic concept

The idea of this photography work is to take a photo of innocent-looking girl with simple outfit. I wanted to emphasize her innocence, therefore I thought too glamourous dresses would ruin it. As for reference, I looked at the story of Alice in Wonderland. The story worked like a charm for me in finding the idea related to the given theme for this project. The world where Alice lives is very beautiful, filled with cute-looking creatures, but it also has hidden mysterious, even fearful atmosphere within it.

The mystery hidden behind the cuteness and beauty of the subject is the main thing that I’d like to show in my photographs. In order to find the technical concept such as the pose of the model, the composition, and the secondary objects; I consult to my photographer friends. Most of them told me that I should play with the color to convey my intention to the viewers. I have to select two different contrasting colors in order to enhance the two different aspects / atmospheres within the photos. By considering their opinion and also reading various references, I decided to pick “The Girl in the Red Skirt” as the title of my project.

Working with the model

The model of this photoshoot is my college friend, Lina. She is from China, and we worked in several different photography projects before this event. As a model, she is very passionate about photography and modeling. Working with her is always a fun thing to do, especially when we didn’t have constrained deadline to complete the work. The moment when I contacted my friend, she just completed her exam so that she would be available at the D-day of the photoshoot. Lina gave me a lot of ideas for this project, including the use of various properties such as balloon and necklace.

For this project, I found a lot of challenges, especially in finding the most appropriate model for the theme. She should have cute, innocent looks; but at the same time also need to have a feeling of mysterious and enigmatic. At first, I doubted that I could find these qualities within Lina. However, after I told her about the concepts and about my doubt, she said that she would work her best to be able to appropriately show the concepts within the photos. Indeed, she did that very well.

The photoshoot

The overall process of the photoshoot was very good. We arrived early morning at the location and immediately started the work. It took about two hours to complete the first session of the project. As it was early morning, we somehow managed to work more productively and efficiently. There were some moments when I had her to stay still for long time, and I think they were the only difficult things to do during the photoshoot.

After two hours of work, we took a lunch break. During the break, I found a lot of more great ideas for the next photoshoot. I told my idea to the model, and she said that it was very good. Without no preparation, we executed my completely new concepts in the second half of the photoshoot. The results are amazingly good, but it is somehow unfortunate that I can’t show it in this article.

I completed the photoshoot session for a total of eight hours work. I immediately went home and edited some of the photos for another two hours, then submitted to my college website just ten hours before the deadline. I was very happy when they announced that I got good results, and some of the photos were even selected for exhibitions in a famous art gallery in my city.
